Thirty Something

Ben celebrated the slide towards forty in traditional Peterson style with a small family party. The kids helped me put together a Utes-themed party since 1) our house is already freekishly red; 2) something colligate seemed appropriate given that it's the last week of bowl games; and 3) it spared Ben from having the big 3-6 immortalized with an Ice Age 2: The Big Freeze cake.

The kids had fun making cards for Ben yesterday. Dylan's card showed all the sports he wants to play with his dad and actually has 36 candles.

Savannah's card was a perfectly adorable kindergarten tribute to how much she "loves Daddy."

Cam and Kade made cards too--which were spectacular--but I have no idea where they are. The final card was one from The Dirty Half Dozen minus Ash with this picture on the front.

Why? Because I thought of the idea at 4:30 pm this afternoon and liked the idea, but not enough to wake Growly up from a nap. Five out of six kids ain't bad, especially when you're scrambling at the last minute. The inside verse used the same un-original wording that I printed on the birthday posters -- "Happy Birthday to Ute." Clever one I am.

And as always, the combination of dark, semi-gloss walls, low ceilings and terrible lighting left me with the two types of pictures I always get: sickly over-yellow or crazy washed out. Tonight's pictures were no different so I converted most of the shots to black and white as a last ditch effort to salvage them. (Hence the abrupt shift to black and white shots ....)

The cake was chosen for purely selfish reasons on my part. Again, it ducked the cartoon caracter cake bullet, but also because an ice cream cake handily combines the (duh) cake and ice cream making for one less round of dishes to wash. Oh, that and I really like Oreo and can rationalize myself around the fact that the cookies and cream goodness matches the color scheme. Bless Peterson for seriously not caring about this aspect of his birthday.

The kids were just a little bit excited to crack into the cake ... since 1:00 pm this afternoon.

Me: No one touches Dad's cake
Kade: Mommy, I'll just hold it for him and make sure it's tasty.
Me: Nice try, Kade.
Kade: Mommy .... I very love you.
Me: I very love you too. Scram.

They sure loved that cake.

Every ...

... last ...

... bite.

I'm gonna use extra dish soap tonight.

Happy Birthday, babe. Love you!

Even though we could not truly party with a Ute theme, we wish we could have been there to celebrate with you. But it looks like you didn't need any help finishing off that cake. PS Thanks Nike for the heads up on copying my rebates. I'm in a battle right now with kraft and it is a good thing I have copies.
